Quick decision summary: If you are powering single-colour 24V strip in a dry indoor location, an IP20 driver sized with 20% headroom is usually the most cost-effective choice. If the driver sits in a bathroom, outdoor enclosure, or anywhere moisture is present, choose IP67. For RGB or RGBW strip, always use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver paired with a dedicated controller.

Who this is for: Electricians, kitchen fitters, interior designers, and DIY installers fitting 24V LED strip lights, COB strip, or neon flex indoors or outdoors across the UK in 2026.

Who this is NOT for: If you need a driver for 48V strip, see our 48V LED driver collection. If you specifically need mains-dimmable TRIAC output, visit TRIAC dimmable LED drivers.

How do you size a 24V LED driver correctly?

To size a 24V LED driver, multiply the wattage per metre of your LED strip by the total run length, then add a minimum 20% headroom. A driver running above 80% rated capacity overheats, shortens its lifespan, and can cause visible flicker on your strip — particularly on longer runs above 5 metres.

For example, a 10-metre run of 14.4W/m single-colour COB strip draws 144W total. Adding 20% headroom means you need a driver rated at 173W minimum — so a 200W unit is the correct choice for that project in 2026.

  • Step 1 — Calculate total wattage: Wattage per metre multiplied by total metres of strip gives you the base load figure.
  • Step 2 — Add 20% headroom: Multiply the base load by 1.2 to reach the minimum driver rating required for reliable operation.
  • Step 3 — Round up to next available size: Never round down, as running a driver near its maximum shortens capacitor life from approximately 50,000 hours to under 20,000 hours.
  • Step 4 — Check cable length: Runs over 10 metres on 24V benefit from parallel wiring to reduce voltage drop below the visible threshold of approximately 5%.
Strip Length (m) Strip Wattage (W/m) Total Load (W) With 20% Headroom (W) Recommended Driver Size (W)
5 9.6 48 58 60
5 14.4 72 86 100
10 9.6 96 115 120
10 14.4 144 173 200
20 14.4 288 346 350

What is the difference between IP20 and IP67 drivers?

IP20 drivers have no moisture protection and are designed for dry indoor locations such as cupboards, ceiling voids, and furniture cavities. IP67 drivers are sealed against temporary water immersion and suit bathrooms, outdoor enclosures, garden installations, and any location where condensation or splashing occurs.

The IP rating directly affects where you can legally install the driver under BS7671 wiring regulations in the UK. Choosing the wrong rating creates a safety risk and can void your installation warranty.

Feature IP20 Driver IP67 Driver
Moisture protection None — dry locations only Sealed — temporary immersion rated
Typical locations Kitchen cupboards, ceiling voids, wardrobes Bathrooms, gardens, outdoor enclosures
Enclosure material Ventilated metal or plastic case Fully potted resin-sealed aluminium
Heat dissipation Passive ventilation through case openings Conduction through sealed aluminium body
BS7671 bathroom zones Not permitted in zones 0, 1, or 2 Permitted in zones 1 and 2 with correct installation
Price range (2026) Typically lower — less material and sealing Typically 15–30% more than equivalent IP20
  • Kitchen under-cabinet lighting: IP20 is sufficient when the driver is mounted inside a dry cupboard, away from sinks and steam.
  • Bathroom mirror or vanity lighting: IP67 is required for zones 1 and 2 under BS7671, even when mounted behind cabinetry within the zone boundary.
  • Garden decking or outdoor stairway: IP67 minimum, and the driver enclosure should sit above ground level to avoid standing water contact.

Which 24V driver do you need for RGB or RGBW strip?

RGB and RGBW 24V strip lights require a non-dimmable constant voltage 24V driver paired with a separate dedicated RGB or RGBW controller. Using a dimmable driver with colour-changing strip causes flicker, colour shift, and premature failure of both the driver and the strip — this is one of the most common wiring errors in UK LED installations.

The controller handles all dimming and colour mixing downstream of the driver. The driver simply provides clean, stable 24V DC power at the correct wattage. Size the driver based on the total wattage of the strip, with the same 20% headroom rule described above.

  • Non-dimmable driver + RGB controller: The correct configuration for all colour-changing 24V strip in 2026.
  • Dimmable driver without controller: Only suitable for single-colour strip where wall-dimmer control is required.
  • Dimmable driver + RGB controller together: Creates signal conflict — the controller and dimmer compete, producing flicker and inconsistent colours.

Can you dim a 24V LED driver?

Yes, specific 24V LED drivers are designed for dimming with trailing-edge (also called ELV) wall dimmers. Trailing-edge dimmers are compatible with most quality LED drivers and provide smooth, flicker-free dimming down to approximately 1–5%. Leading-edge dimmers frequently cause visible flicker because their sharp voltage switching is unsuited to LED circuitry.

If your existing dimmer is leading-edge and you experience flicker, replacing it with a trailing-edge unit typically costs around fifteen pounds and solves the problem immediately. Most electricians in the UK carry trailing-edge dimmers as standard stock in 2026.

  • Trailing-edge (ELV) dimmers: Recommended for all dimmable 24V LED drivers — smooth fade curve, minimal flicker, wide compatibility.
  • Leading-edge (TRIAC) dimmers: Designed for resistive and inductive loads — often causes buzzing and flicker with LED drivers unless the driver is specifically TRIAC-rated.
  • 0–10V or DALI dimming: Used in commercial installations where centralised lighting control is required — requires a driver with a dedicated 0–10V or DALI input.

For projects requiring mains-side TRIAC dimming, see our dedicated TRIAC dimmable driver range.

How do you wire a 24V LED driver safely?

A 24V LED driver converts 220–240V AC mains to 24V DC output. The mains side must be installed by a competent person in accordance with BS7671. The 24V DC output side falls within the SELV voltage threshold under BS7671, provided the driver is a suitably isolated, safety-rated unit — this significantly reduces shock risk under dry conditions but does not eliminate it entirely.

  1. Step 1 — Isolate the mains supply: Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit and lock off the MCB before starting any wiring work.
  2. Step 2 — Mount the driver in a ventilated location: IP20 drivers need airflow around all sides with a minimum 20mm clearance from surrounding surfaces to prevent heat build-up.
  3. Step 3 — Connect the mains input: Use correctly rated 3-core cable (typically 1.0mm or 1.5mm twin and earth) to the L, N, and E terminals on the driver input side.
  4. Step 4 — Connect the 24V DC output: Run 2-core cable from the V+ and V- output terminals to the LED strip, keeping polarity correct throughout.
  5. Step 5 — Use parallel wiring for multiple runs: Wire each strip run independently back to the driver output terminals rather than daisy-chaining in series, which multiplies voltage drop across the circuit.
  6. Step 6 — Test before final fixing: Power on and measure the output voltage with a multimeter — it should read between 23.5V and 24.5V DC at the strip end under load.

Never power LED strip while it is coiled on the reel. Heat builds up rapidly in coiled strip, damaging the adhesive backing and creating a fire risk. Always unroll and mount the strip on an aluminium profile or flat surface before powering on.

What are common 24V LED driver mistakes to avoid?

The most frequent 24V LED driver mistakes in UK installations are undersizing the driver, using a dimmable driver with RGB strip, choosing IP20 for damp locations, and mounting the driver in an unventilated enclosure. Each of these errors shortens the life of the driver and the connected strip, often within the first 6 to 12 months.

  • Undersizing the driver: Running a driver above 80% of its rated wattage causes capacitor stress and early failure — always add 20% headroom minimum.
  • Wrong IP rating for location: An IP20 driver in a bathroom or outdoor location will fail from moisture ingress, typically within weeks during UK autumn and winter conditions.
  • Dimmable driver with RGB or RGBW strip: Produces flicker, colour banding, and premature driver failure — always use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver with a dedicated controller for colour-changing strip.
  • Series wiring on long runs: Voltage drop multiplies across each connection in series — parallel wiring from the driver to each strip run keeps brightness consistent.
  • Mounting on bare metal without insulation: Direct contact between driver terminals and uninsulated metal surfaces can cause short circuits — always use insulated mounting brackets or non-conductive surfaces.
  • Powering strip while coiled: Heat concentrates inside the reel, destroying adhesive and creating a fire risk within minutes under full power.

Frequently asked questions — 24V LED drivers

What wattage 24V LED driver do I need?

  • Calculate total strip wattage: Multiply wattage per metre by total metres of strip in the circuit.
  • Add 20% headroom: This keeps the driver operating comfortably below its maximum, extending lifespan to approximately 50,000 hours.
  • Round up: Always select the next available driver wattage above your headroom figure — never round down.

Can I use a 24V driver with 12V LED strip?

  • No — voltage must match exactly. A 24V driver connected to 12V strip will push double the intended voltage through the LEDs, causing immediate damage or failure.
  • Always confirm strip voltage: Check the label on the strip reel or the product listing before purchasing a driver.

Is a 24V LED driver the same as a 24V transformer?

  • In the LED industry, the terms are used interchangeably in 2026. A 24V LED driver and a 24V LED transformer both convert 240V AC mains to 24V DC constant voltage output.
  • The technical distinction: A true transformer only steps voltage down without rectifying AC to DC, but LED product listings commonly use both terms to describe the same constant voltage DC driver.

Do I need a dimmable or non-dimmable 24V driver?

  • Single-colour strip with wall dimmer: Use a dimmable 24V driver with a trailing-edge dimmer switch.
  • RGB or RGBW colour-changing strip: Use a non-dimmable 24V driver with a dedicated RGB or RGBW controller — never a dimmable driver.
  • Single-colour without dimming: A non-dimmable driver is the simplest, most cost-effective option.

Where should I mount a 24V LED driver?

  • Accessible location: Mount the driver where it can be reached for maintenance or replacement without dismantling cabinetry.
  • Ventilated space: IP20 drivers require minimum 20mm airflow clearance on all sides to prevent thermal shutdown.
  • Dry or rated location: Use IP20 for dry indoor spaces and IP67 for bathrooms, outdoor enclosures, or anywhere moisture is present.

How long does a 24V LED driver last?

  • Typical lifespan: A quality 24V LED driver operated within 80% of its rated wattage lasts approximately 40,000 to 50,000 hours in normal conditions.
  • What shortens lifespan: Overloading, poor ventilation, excessive ambient heat, and moisture ingress (in non-IP67 units) are the primary causes of early failure in UK installations.

What does SELV mean for a 24V LED driver?

  • SELV stands for Safety Extra Low Voltage. 24V DC falls well within the SELV threshold under BS7671 (120V DC ripple-free maximum), provided the driver is a suitably isolated, safety-rated unit.
  • SELV is a system classification: It requires correct installation and an appropriately isolated driver — it is not simply a voltage number. SELV significantly reduces shock risk under dry conditions but does not eliminate it entirely.

Can I run two 24V LED strips from one driver?

  • Yes, using parallel wiring. Connect each strip run independently to the driver V+ and V- output terminals rather than daisy-chaining one strip after the other.
  • Size the driver for the combined load: Add the wattage of both strip runs together, then apply the 20% headroom rule to the total figure.
  • Maximum run length on 24V: ATOM LED 24V single-colour strip supports up to 20 metres on a single feed — beyond that, use a second driver or parallel feed.

What safety certifications should a 24V LED driver have?

  • UKCA or CE marking: Required for sale and installation in the UK in 2026 — confirms the driver meets essential safety and EMC requirements.
  • EN 61347-1 and EN 61347-2-13: The specific product safety standards for LED driver and control gear sold in the UK and EU markets.
  • IP rating tested to IEC 60529: Confirms the stated ingress protection level has been independently verified.
