Quick decision summary: If your run is under 5 metres and you already have a 12V DC supply — from a battery system, solar controller, or existing 12V transformer — 12V single colour neon flex is the right choice. For runs over 5 metres, consider 24V or 48V neon flex to reduce voltage drop. For colour-changing effects, see our RGB neon flex collection.

Who this is for: sign makers producing compact neon-style lettering, installers working with existing 12V battery or solar systems, hobbyists building automotive and campervan interior lighting, and anyone running short neon flex accents under 5 metres in 2026.

Who this is NOT for: anyone planning a continuous run over 5 metres — voltage drop at 12V makes longer runs impractical without multiple injection points. For longer installations, specify 24V or 48V neon flex instead. If you need colour-changing output, 12V single colour is not the right product — see RGB neon flex.

Common buying mistakes to avoid:

  • Running 12V neon flex beyond 5 metres without power injection: At 12V, current draw is higher than at 24V for the same wattage, meaning voltage drop is visible at shorter distances — always check the maximum single-feed length for your chosen product.
  • Using undersized cable at 12V: Because 12V draws approximately double the current of 24V at the same wattage, thinner cable creates more resistive loss — use a minimum of 1.5mm² cable and keep cable runs as short as possible.
  • Choosing IP65 for permanent outdoor UK installations: IP65 is splash-rated only and is not suitable for prolonged UK outdoor exposure — specify IP67 as the minimum for any permanent outdoor project.

When should you choose 12V neon flex over 24V or 48V?

Choose 12V neon flex when your installation requires a low-voltage supply that matches an existing 12V DC system — battery backup, solar controller, automotive, or marine — or when total run length is under 5 metres. For anything longer, 24V or 48V reduces voltage drop and simplifies wiring.

The 12V specification exists for a practical reason: compatibility. Many off-grid, mobile, and backup systems operate at 12V DC, and stepping up to 24V would require a voltage converter that adds cost and a point of failure. In a fixed mains-powered installation during 2025–2026, 24V and 48V are almost always more efficient choices, but 12V remains the correct specification for these situations:

  • Battery and solar-powered lighting: Most leisure batteries, caravan systems, and small solar controllers output 12V DC — 12V neon flex connects directly without conversion.
  • Automotive and marine interiors: Vehicle electrical systems run at approximately 12V nominal, making 12V neon flex a drop-in fit for campervan conversions, boat cabins, and custom vehicle accent lighting.
  • Compact signage under 1 metre: Small neon-style signs, lettering, and logo illumination where total run length is minimal and voltage drop is negligible.
  • Existing 12V infrastructure: Retrofit projects where a 12V driver or transformer is already installed and replacing it would add unnecessary cost.

What colour temperatures are available in 12V neon flex?

ATOM LED 12V single colour neon flex is available in warm white (2700K–3000K), natural white (4000K), and cool white (6000K). All colour temperatures use CRI90+ LEDs for accurate colour rendering across residential, hospitality, and retail environments.

Colour temperature selection in 2026 projects should be driven by application:

  • Warm white (2700K–3000K): Bedrooms, living rooms, restaurants, bars, and any setting where a relaxed, ambient atmosphere is the priority. This is the most popular specification for residential cove lighting and hospitality signage.
  • Natural white (4000K): Kitchens, bathrooms, retail displays, and workspaces where accurate colour rendering matters without the clinical feel of cool white. A strong choice for product display lighting and task-adjacent accent lighting.
  • Cool white (6000K): Commercial signage, garage and workshop accent lighting, and modern architectural features where a crisp, daylight-balanced output is required.

Every 12V neon flex in the ATOM LED range uses the same UV-stable silicone extrusion body regardless of colour temperature, meaning IP rating, bend radius, and mounting method remain consistent across the range.

How does voltage drop affect 12V neon flex run length?

Voltage drop at 12V is approximately double the rate of 24V at the same wattage over the same distance. For a 10W/m neon flex, expect visible brightness reduction beyond 5 metres on a single feed at 12V. Parallel wiring or a mid-point power injection extends usable length.

Voltage drop in any LED circuit increases with current and cable length. At 12V, the same wattage draws twice the current compared to 24V — and current is the primary driver of resistive loss in copper cable. Inside a sealed silicone neon flex extrusion, heat generated by the LEDs raises the copper trace resistance further, compounding the effect at longer distances.

Practical guidelines for 12V neon flex installations in 2026:

  • Under 3 metres: No special measures required — standard 0.75mm² cable from driver to neon flex is typically sufficient.
  • 3 to 5 metres: Use 1.5mm² cable between the driver and the neon flex to minimise cable-side losses. Keep the driver as close to the neon flex as possible.
  • Over 5 metres: Either use parallel wiring with a power injection at the midpoint, or switch to 24V neon flex where voltage drop occurs at half the rate.

If you are unsure whether 12V will deliver even brightness for your planned run length, contact our technical team at operations@atomled.co.uk or call 01952 370028 — we will calculate the expected drop and recommend the correct voltage.

How do you install 12V single colour neon flex?

Installing 12V neon flex requires a compatible 12V DC driver, appropriate cable gauge, mounting clips or a neon flex profile, and basic low-voltage wiring. Cut only at marked cut points using FreeCut technology, mount to a flat surface or aluminium profile, and always wire in parallel for multiple sections.

  1. Step 1 — Plan the layout and measure: Map out the exact path of the neon flex, noting any curves. Measure total length and confirm it falls within the single-feed maximum for your chosen product. Mark cut points if the neon flex needs trimming.
  2. Step 2 — Select and position the driver: Choose a 12V LED driver rated at a minimum of 120% of the total neon flex wattage. Position the driver as close to the neon flex as possible to reduce cable-side voltage drop.
  3. Step 3 — Prepare the mounting surface: Neon flex must be mounted on a clean, flat surface. For best thermal management, use an aluminium neon flex profile or mounting clips spaced at 200–300mm intervals. Never mount neon flex directly on bare uninsulated metal — use an insulating barrier to prevent short circuits.
  4. Step 4 — Cut the neon flex to length: Cut only at the marked cut points using sharp scissors or a craft knife. ATOM LED 12V neon flex uses FreeCut technology, allowing cuts at any marked interval without voiding the 5-year warranty.
  5. Step 5 — Wire and connect: Use 1.5mm² cable at 12V for runs over 3 metres. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. For multiple sections, wire in parallel — never in series. Ensure all connections are secure and insulated before powering on.
  6. Step 6 — Test before final mounting: Connect the neon flex to the driver and confirm even brightness across the entire length before fixing it permanently in place. Check for any dim sections that indicate a wiring issue or excessive voltage drop.

Never power neon flex while it is still coiled on the reel — heat builds up inside the coil and can damage the adhesive, silicone body, and LEDs.

What driver do you need for 12V neon flex?

A 12V neon flex installation requires a constant voltage 12V DC driver rated at a minimum of 120% of the total connected wattage. For a 5-metre run of 10W/m neon flex, that means a driver rated at 60W minimum. Oversizing the driver by 20% extends its lifespan and prevents thermal shutdown.

Driver selection for 12V neon flex in 2026 follows the same core principles as any constant voltage LED circuit, with one important difference: the higher current draw at 12V means the driver works harder than it would powering the same wattage at 24V. This makes the 120% headroom rule more important at 12V than at higher voltages.

Neon Flex Length Wattage at 10W/m Minimum Driver Size (120%) Current Draw at 12V
1 metre 10W 12W 0.83A
2 metres 20W 24W 1.67A
3 metres 30W 36W 2.50A
5 metres 50W 60W 4.17A
  • Single colour dimming: If you want to dim your 12V neon flex, use a TRIAC dimmable driver paired with a trailing-edge dimmer — trailing-edge dimmers are compatible with most LED drivers, while leading-edge dimmers frequently cause flicker. The trailing-edge fix typically costs approximately £15.
  • Non-dimmable installations: A standard non-dimmable 12V constant voltage driver is the most cost-effective option when dimming is not required.
  • IP rating of the driver: Match the driver's IP rating to its installation location — an IP20 driver is fine inside a dry cupboard, but outdoor or damp locations require an IP67 driver.

How does 12V neon flex compare to 12V LED strip?

12V neon flex produces a continuous, dot-free line of light through a silicone diffuser, while 12V LED strip shows individual LED dots along an exposed flexible PCB. Neon flex is the correct choice when a smooth, even glow matters — strip is better suited to concealed, utility, or under-cabinet lighting.

  • Light output character: Neon flex diffuses light through a shaped silicone body, creating a uniform glow with no visible hot spots. LED strip emits from exposed chips, creating a dotted pattern that is visible on reflective surfaces and at close viewing distances.
  • Flexibility and bending: Neon flex bends in one plane (side-bend or top-bend depending on the profile) and holds its shape. LED strip is flat and flexible in all directions but does not maintain a formed curve without a mounting profile.
  • IP protection: Neon flex is inherently sealed inside its silicone extrusion, achieving IP67 or IP68 depending on the product. LED strip requires a separate IP-rated coating or silicone sleeve to achieve outdoor ratings.
  • Mounting: Neon flex uses clips or dedicated neon flex profiles. LED strip uses adhesive backing and is often installed inside aluminium profiles.
  • Best application fit: Choose neon flex for signage, coves, architectural curves, and anywhere the light source is directly visible. Choose LED strip for concealed under-cabinet, under-shelf, or utility lighting where the source is hidden from view.

Frequently asked questions about 12V neon flex

Can you cut 12V neon flex to any length?

  • Yes — ATOM LED 12V neon flex uses FreeCut technology, allowing you to cut at any marked cut point without voiding the 5-year warranty.
  • Cut intervals vary by product — check the product listing for the exact cut length, which is typically every 25mm or 50mm depending on the model.

Is 12V neon flex safe to touch?

  • 12V DC is classified as Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) under BS7671 when supplied from a suitably isolated, safety-rated driver, meaning significantly reduced shock risk under normal dry conditions.
  • The silicone body remains cool to the touch under normal operating conditions, but always ensure adequate ventilation and never operate while coiled.

Can 12V neon flex be used outdoors in the UK?

  • Yes, provided you select an IP67 or IP68 rated product. IP65 is splash-rated only and is not suitable for permanent UK outdoor installations exposed to rain, frost, and standing water.
  • Pair the neon flex with an outdoor-rated IP67 driver and ensure all connections are waterproofed with appropriate junction boxes or potting compound.

What is the maximum run length for 12V neon flex?

  • The practical maximum single-feed run for 12V neon flex is approximately 5 metres before voltage drop causes visible brightness reduction at the far end.
  • For longer installations, use parallel wiring with mid-point power injection or switch to 24V or 48V neon flex where voltage drop occurs at a slower rate.

Do you need a special driver for 12V neon flex?

  • You need a constant voltage 12V DC LED driver rated at a minimum of 120% of your total neon flex wattage.
  • Standard non-dimmable or TRIAC dimmable 12V drivers from the ATOM LED range are compatible — browse our LED power supply collection.

Can you connect 12V neon flex to a battery?

  • Yes — 12V neon flex connects directly to any 12V DC battery source, including leisure batteries, caravan systems, and solar battery banks.
  • Ensure the battery can supply sufficient current for the total neon flex wattage — a 5-metre run at 10W/m draws approximately 4.17A at 12V.

Does 12V neon flex come in warm white?

  • Yes — warm white (2700K–3000K) is the most popular colour temperature in the ATOM LED 12V neon flex range, ideal for residential coves, signage, and hospitality environments.
  • Natural white (4000K) and cool white (6000K) are also available across the range.

How do you join two pieces of 12V neon flex together?

  • Use dedicated neon flex connectors or solder the connection, ensuring positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative polarity is maintained.
  • Waterproof the joint with heat-shrink tubing or silicone sealant if the installation is outdoors or in a damp environment. Browse joining accessories in our accessories collection.
