COB LED Strip Lights 24V & 48V

Eliminate every visible LED dot from your lighting scheme with dot-free COB LED strip. Unlike traditional SMD strip that produces repeating bright spots separated by dark gaps, COB (Chip on Board) technology places 320 to 720 individual LED chips per metre directly onto a flexible PCB, creating one continuous ribbon of light with no hotspots, no dark zones, and no dot pattern visible to the eye.

The ATOM LED dot-free COB strip range covers 24V and 48V DC in warm white (2700K-3000K), natural white (4000K), and cool white (6500K), plus RGBW colour-changing options. Every reel ships with CRI90+ colour accuracy, FreeCut technology for cutting at any point without voiding the 5-year warranty, and free UK delivery from our Telford warehouse.

What makes COB LED strip dot-free and why does it matter?

COB (Chip on Board) LED strip eliminates visible dots by mounting 320 to 720 individual LED chips per metre directly onto the flexible PCB surface, covered by a single phosphor layer. This removes the air gaps between individual SMD packages that cause the repeating dot pattern visible in older LED strip, producing instead a single continuous line of even light output across the full length of the strip.

The dot-free effect is not a marketing term applied to slightly improved SMD strip. It describes a fundamentally different manufacturing process. In a standard SMD strip from 2018 or earlier, each LED sits inside its own plastic housing (typically 2835, 3528, or 5050 packages) spaced 5mm to 16mm apart. Light radiates from each package individually, creating bright spots directly above each LED and darker shadows between them. When mounted under a shallow diffuser or used without a profile, these dots are clearly visible — particularly on ceilings, coves, and wall-wash applications where the strip is close to the surface it illuminates.

COB construction in 2026 eliminates this problem at source. The individual LED dies are bonded directly to the copper traces on the PCB, then coated with a uniform phosphor and silicone encapsulant layer across the entire surface. Because there are no individual housings and the chip spacing is typically 1.5mm to 3mm depending on density, the phosphor layer blends the light output into one homogeneous line before it leaves the strip surface.

  • 320 LEDs/m density: Produces a smooth, dot-free line suitable for most cove, under-cabinet, and concealed lighting applications where a diffuser channel is used.
  • 480 LEDs/m density: Achieves a completely dot-free output even without a diffuser, making it the preferred choice for exposed or semi-exposed installations in 2026 projects.
  • 720 LEDs/m density: The highest density currently available, delivering a perfectly uniform light line suitable for architectural, retail display, and close-proximity applications where the strip is visible at distances under 300mm.
  • Phosphor uniformity: The continuous phosphor coating acts as a built-in diffuser, eliminating the need for deep or heavily frosted aluminium profile channels that reduce total light output by 15-30%.

This matters in practice because dot-free light is not just an aesthetic preference — it is a specification requirement on a growing number of 2026 UK interior design and architectural projects. Specifiers for hotels, restaurants, residential kitchens, and retail environments now routinely reject SMD strip in favour of COB specifically because visible dots create a cheap, unfinished appearance that undermines the quality of the space.

Who should buy dot-free COB strip — and who should not?

Dot-free COB strip is the correct choice for interior designers, kitchen fitters, bathroom installers, architects, and electricians working on projects where the lighting must produce a clean, continuous line with no visible LED dots. It is not the right product for buyers who need individually addressable colour effects, pixel-mapped signage, or ultra-low-budget background lighting where dot visibility is irrelevant.

Quick decision summary

If you need a smooth, continuous line of light for coves, under-cabinet runs, coffer lighting, or architectural wall-washing — buy dot-free COB strip. If you need individually controlled pixel effects or chasing patterns, look at addressable digital RGB COB strip instead.

This range is designed for:

  • Kitchen designers and fitters: Under-cabinet and plinth lighting where the strip is close to eye level and any dot pattern would be visible through translucent diffuser covers.
  • Interior designers: Cove lighting, coffer lighting, shelf lighting, and architectural accent lines in residential and hospitality spaces.
  • Bathroom installers: Mirror backlighting, bath surround illumination, and vanity lighting where a clean, even glow is essential — select IP67 or IP68 rated options for wet zones.
  • Electrical contractors: Commercial fit-outs, retail display cabinets, reception areas, and office accent lighting where the specification calls for dot-free output.
  • Sign makers and display fabricators: Backlit panels, lightbox signage, and retail display features where hotspots would be visible through the panel face material.

This range is NOT for:

  • Pixel-mapped or chasing effects: COB dot-free strip produces one uniform colour across its length. For individually addressable colour effects, use digital SPI COB strip.
  • Mains-voltage (240V AC) installations: All ATOM LED dot-free COB strip runs on low-voltage DC (24V or 48V) and requires a separate driver. It cannot be connected directly to mains wiring.
  • Projects where budget overrides quality: If dot visibility is irrelevant to your application — for example, strip hidden behind an opaque pelmet that is never directly viewed — standard SMD strip costs less and performs adequately.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing SMD strip labelled "high density": Even 120 LED/m SMD strip still shows distinct dots at close range because each LED sits inside a separate housing — the gaps between housings create the dot pattern regardless of density.
  • Ignoring voltage drop on long runs: A 10m run of 24V strip can lose noticeable brightness at the far end if wired in series. Use 48V for runs over 10m, or wire in parallel from both ends. ATOM LED 48V COB strip supports up to 30m single-feed runs.
  • Skipping the aluminium profile: Even though COB strip is dot-free, an aluminium profile is still recommended for heat dissipation and mechanical protection — particularly on runs over 5m or installations rated at 14W/m and above.
  • Using a dimmable driver with RGBW COB strip: RGBW dot-free COB strip requires a non-dimmable constant voltage driver paired with a dedicated RGBW controller. Using a dimmable driver causes flicker, colour shifting, and premature failure.

How does dot-free COB strip compare to traditional SMD LED strip?

Dot-free COB strip outperforms traditional SMD strip in light uniformity, colour consistency, and installation aesthetics. COB achieves a continuous light line by mounting 320-720 bare LED dies per metre under a single phosphor layer, while SMD strip relies on individually packaged LEDs spaced 5-16mm apart, creating visible bright spots and dark gaps that no diffuser fully eliminates.

Feature Dot-Free COB Strip (2026) Traditional SMD Strip (2835/5050)
Dot visibility No visible dots — continuous light line Visible dots at all viewing distances under 2m
LED density 320-720 LEDs/m 30-120 LEDs/m
LED mounting Bare die bonded directly to PCB Individual plastic SMD packages soldered to PCB
Phosphor layer Continuous coating across full strip width Individual phosphor per LED package
CRI (typical) CRI90+ standard CRI80 standard, CRI90 at premium
Diffuser requirement Optional — dot-free even without diffuser at 480+ LEDs/m Required — dots visible without deep frosted diffuser
Flexibility Bends more smoothly — no rigid SMD packages Limited by package size — can crack at tight bends
Heat per metre (typical 14W/m) Distributed evenly across full PCB surface Concentrated at individual LED locations
Colour consistency Uniform — single phosphor batch per reel Can vary between individual LED packages
Price per metre (2026 UK average) Approximately 20-40% higher than equivalent SMD Lower cost — commodity product in 2026

The practical difference is visible within seconds of switching on both types side by side. Position an SMD 2835 strip (60 LEDs/m) next to a 480 LED/m COB strip inside the same aluminium profile with a frosted diffuser, and the SMD strip still shows a repeating dot pattern through the cover while the COB strip produces a perfectly even line. This is why architects and lighting designers in 2026 now specify COB as the default strip type for any visible or semi-visible installation in the UK market.

For buyers upgrading existing SMD installations, COB strip typically fits the same LED strip aluminium profiles with 10mm or 12mm internal width — the PCB dimensions are compatible with most standard channels already in place.

Should you choose 24V or 48V for dot-free COB LED strip?

Choose 24V dot-free COB strip for runs up to 10m where existing 24V drivers are already in place, or where the installation is compact enough that voltage drop is negligible. Choose 48V for runs over 10m, multi-zone layouts, or commercial projects where voltage drop at half the rate of 24V reduces the need for additional power injection points and simplifies wiring.

Specification 24V Dot-Free COB Strip 48V Dot-Free COB Strip
Maximum single-feed run (single colour) Up to 20m Up to 30m
Maximum dual-feed run Not typically specified Up to 50m
Voltage drop per metre (14W/m typical) Approximately 2x the rate of 48V Approximately half the rate of 24V
Current draw per metre (14W/m) ~0.58A per metre ~0.29A per metre
Wire gauge required (10m run) Thicker gauge needed to manage higher current Thinner gauge acceptable due to lower current
Driver availability in 2026 Widely available — largest range Growing range — fewer budget options
Controller compatibility Compatible with most 24V controllers and dimmers Requires 48V-rated controllers and dimmers
Safety classification SELV when supplied from isolated, safety-rated driver Falls within SELV threshold (120V DC max) under BS7671 when supplied from suitably isolated, safety-rated driver
Best suited for Residential kitchens, bathrooms, compact retail displays Commercial fit-outs, long corridors, large cove runs, multi-zone layouts

The voltage decision affects dot-free performance indirectly. Voltage drop does not create dots — COB technology prevents that regardless — but significant voltage drop causes the far end of a strip run to dim noticeably compared to the feed end. On a dot-free strip, this uneven brightness undermines the very uniformity that COB is designed to deliver. For runs over 10m in a single direction, 48V COB strip is the practical choice because it halves the current draw per metre and delays the point at which brightness variation becomes perceptible.

For residential projects where runs rarely exceed 5-8m — a kitchen island, a bathroom mirror surround, a bedroom headboard cove — 24V COB strip performs identically to 48V in dot-free output and pairs with the widest range of dimmers, controllers, and 24V drivers currently on the UK market.

For commercial projects in 2026, 48V has become the default specification for new installations because the wiring savings on long runs — thinner cables, fewer power injection points, fewer drivers — more than offset the slightly higher cost of 48V drivers.

What colour temperatures are available in dot-free COB LED strip?

ATOM LED dot-free COB strip is available in warm white (2700K-3000K), natural white (4000K), and cool white (6500K) in single-colour versions, plus RGBW for colour-changing applications. All single-colour options are rated at CRI90+ as standard, delivering accurate colour rendering for residential, hospitality, and retail lighting where skin tones, food displays, and material textures must appear natural under artificial light.

  • Warm white 2700K: The most popular choice for UK residential installations in 2026 — living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, and hospitality venues where a relaxed, inviting atmosphere is required. Closely matches the colour temperature of traditional halogen lighting.
  • Warm white 3000K: Slightly brighter and more neutral than 2700K. Preferred for kitchens, modern bathrooms, and retail displays where warmth is required but with improved task visibility.
  • Natural white 4000K: Clean, neutral light suitable for offices, workspaces, garages, utility rooms, and commercial environments where accurate colour perception is more important than mood lighting.
  • Cool white 6500K: High-energy daylight-equivalent output typically specified for commercial, industrial, and clinical environments. Less common in residential UK projects but used in workshops, laboratories, and retail spaces requiring maximum visual clarity.
  • RGBW colour-changing: Combines red, green, blue, and dedicated white LEDs in a single dot-free COB strip. The white channel solves the problem inherent in standard RGB strip — which cannot produce a clean, warm white and instead outputs a cold, violet-tinged approximation. RGBW COB strip requires a dedicated RGBW controller and a non-dimmable constant voltage driver. Browse the full RGBW COB strip range.

CRI90+ matters because the dot-free benefit is not only about eliminating visible hotspots — it also contributes to more consistent colour rendering across the full length of the strip. When every LED die shares the same phosphor coating applied in one continuous layer, colour temperature variation between individual LEDs (a known issue with SMD strip) is reduced. On a 5m run of ATOM LED dot-free COB strip, you should expect no more than approximately 100K variation from one end to the other — compared with 200-300K variation that can occur on lower-quality SMD strip where individual LED packages are binned from different production batches.

Where do designers and contractors use dot-free COB strip in 2026?

In 2026, dot-free COB strip is used wherever the lighting itself is visible or semi-visible and a continuous, professional-quality light line is required. The most common UK applications include kitchen under-cabinet lighting, cove and coffer ceiling details, bathroom mirror surrounds, staircase nosing, retail display cabinets, hospitality feature walls, and architectural accent lines in commercial reception areas.

  • Kitchen under-cabinet and plinth lighting: The most common residential application. Dot-free COB strip mounted in a shallow aluminium profile under wall cabinets produces a uniform wash of light across the worktop without the repeating bright-dark pattern that SMD strip creates. Warm white 3000K at 14W/m is the most popular specification for this application.
  • Cove and coffer ceiling lighting: Recessed into a plaster cove or coffer channel, dot-free strip produces a smooth gradient of indirect light across the ceiling. At 480 LEDs/m and above, no separate diffuser is needed — the strip can sit in an open channel and the light output remains perfectly even.
  • Staircase nosing and tread lighting: Safety lighting that also functions as an architectural feature. Dot-free output is important here because the strip is viewed at close range from above as you walk down the stairs.
  • Retail display and cabinet lighting: Jewellery, cosmetics, and high-end retail all require dot-free strip in 2026 because visible LED dots cheapen the appearance of the display. CRI90+ ensures product colours appear accurate under the lighting.
  • Bathroom mirror and vanity lighting: IP67-rated dot-free COB strip mounted behind or around bathroom mirrors creates an even halo of light for grooming and makeup application. Select IP-rated COB strip for any installation in bathroom wet zones.
  • Commercial reception and corridor accent lighting: Linear wall-wash features, reception desk uplighting, and corridor wayfinding all benefit from the unbroken light line that only COB technology delivers. 48V is the standard specification for commercial runs in 2026 due to lower voltage drop over longer distances.
  • Signage and lightbox backlighting: Dot-free strip behind translucent signage panels ensures even illumination across the entire sign face with no hotspots — a common complaint with SMD-lit signage. Visit LED neon sign-making supplies for related products.

How do you install dot-free COB LED strip correctly?

Installing dot-free COB LED strip follows the same core steps as any DC low-voltage LED strip: plan your run length and wattage, select the correct driver, mount the strip in an aluminium profile for heat management, wire in parallel for runs exceeding the single-feed maximum, and connect to a compatible dimmer or controller. The key difference with COB strip is that overheating damages the phosphor layer uniformity — so heat dissipation via a profile is more important than with basic SMD strip.

  1. Step 1 — Measure and plan the run: Measure the total length of each strip run in metres. Calculate total wattage by multiplying length by the strip's rated watts per metre (typically 10W/m to 20W/m). Add 20% headroom to determine the minimum driver wattage. For runs over 10m on 24V strip, plan to wire in parallel or switch to 48V to manage voltage drop.
  2. Step 2 — Select the correct driver: Choose a constant voltage driver rated for the strip's voltage (24V or 48V). The driver wattage must exceed your total strip wattage by at least 20%. If you plan to dim single-colour strip, select a TRIAC dimmable driver compatible with trailing-edge dimmers. For RGBW dot-free strip, use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver paired with a separate RGBW controller — never a dimmable driver, which causes flicker and colour shift.
  3. Step 3 — Prepare the mounting surface: Clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove dust and grease. If using an aluminium profile, slot the strip into the channel before peeling the 3M adhesive backing. Never mount COB strip directly onto bare metal surfaces without an insulation layer — the exposed copper traces on the PCB underside can short-circuit against conductive surfaces.
  4. Step 4 — Mount the strip and connect: Peel the adhesive backing and press the strip firmly into the profile channel. Use soldered connections or quality push-fit connectors at each joint — check that connector pin spacing matches the strip's solder pad layout. Wire runs in parallel (each strip run fed directly from the driver) rather than in series. Parallel wiring is best practice because series wiring multiplies voltage drop across the total run length.
  5. Step 5 — Test before final installation: Power on the strip briefly to confirm even brightness, correct colour temperature, and dimmer responsiveness before fitting the diffuser cover and mounting the profile in its final position. Never leave strip powered while it is still coiled on the reel — heat builds up rapidly, destroying the adhesive bond and creating a fire risk.
  6. Step 6 — Fit the diffuser and secure the profile: Clip the frosted or clear diffuser cover into the aluminium profile. Secure the profile to the mounting surface using the included brackets or mounting clips at 300-400mm intervals. Ensure end caps are fitted to prevent dust ingress and give a clean finished appearance.
  7. Step 7 — Final check and handover: Use a multimeter to verify voltage at the far end of each run. On a correctly wired 24V system, expect no less than approximately 22.5V at the last metre. On 48V, no less than approximately 46V. Document the driver location, wattage, and strip specifications for the client or end user.

What drivers and power supplies work with dot-free COB LED strip?

Dot-free COB LED strip requires a constant voltage DC driver matched to the strip's operating voltage — either 24V or 48V. The driver's wattage rating must exceed the total connected strip wattage by a minimum of 20% to prevent overloading. For dimmable single-colour installations, use a TRIAC dimmable driver with a trailing-edge dimmer. For RGBW dot-free strip, use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver paired with a dedicated RGBW controller — never a dimmable driver.

  • Constant voltage drivers: The correct driver type for all COB strip. These output a fixed voltage (24V or 48V DC) regardless of the load connected. Do not use constant current drivers — these are designed for individual LED modules, not strip.
  • Driver wattage calculation: Multiply the strip's watts-per-metre by the total run length, then add 20%. Example: 14W/m x 8m = 112W. Add 20% = 134.4W minimum. Select a 150W driver. Running a driver at full rated capacity shortens its lifespan and increases heat output.
  • TRIAC dimmable drivers: Required if you want to dim single-colour dot-free strip using a standard wall dimmer. Pair with a trailing-edge dimmer — leading-edge dimmers frequently cause visible flicker on LED circuits. The trailing-edge fix costs approximately 15 pounds if you need to swap an existing dimmer.
  • DALI and 0-10V drivers: Used in commercial lighting control systems where the strip is integrated into a building management or scene-setting system. These are typically specified by the lighting designer or M&E consultant on the project.
  • Non-dimmable drivers for RGBW: RGBW dot-free COB strip must always be paired with a non-dimmable constant voltage driver. Dimming and colour mixing are handled by a separate RGBW controller positioned between the driver and the strip. Using a dimmable driver in this circuit causes flicker, colour shifting, and premature component failure.

Can you dim dot-free COB strip without flicker?

Yes — single-colour dot-free COB strip dims smoothly and without flicker when paired with a TRIAC dimmable constant voltage driver and a trailing-edge dimmer. Flicker occurs when a leading-edge dimmer is used, because the rapid on-off switching pattern is incompatible with the driver's input circuitry. Replacing a leading-edge dimmer with a trailing-edge model typically costs approximately 15 pounds and resolves the issue immediately.

  • Trailing-edge dimmers: The correct type for LED driver circuits in 2026. These switch off the AC waveform at the trailing edge, producing smooth, flicker-free dimming down to approximately 5-10% on most quality drivers.
  • Leading-edge dimmers: Designed for resistive loads (halogen, incandescent). They switch on at the leading edge of the AC waveform, which creates a high inrush current spike that most LED drivers cannot handle cleanly — resulting in visible flicker, buzzing from the driver, and in some cases premature failure.
  • PWM dimming via controller: For RGBW dot-free COB strip, dimming is handled by a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controller positioned after a non-dimmable driver. The controller dims each colour channel independently at a frequency high enough (typically 1kHz-20kHz) to be invisible to the human eye.
  • Smart dimming: Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi controllers from brands like MiBoxer, Skydance, and Ltech enable app-based and voice-controlled dimming of dot-free COB strip without the need for a wall-mounted dimmer switch.

If you have an existing installation that flickers, the first check is always the dimmer type. Swap to a trailing-edge model before replacing the driver — this resolves approximately 80% of LED strip flicker complaints in UK installations.

What IP ratings are available for outdoor dot-free COB strip?

ATOM LED dot-free COB strip is available in IP20 (indoor only), IP65, IP67, and IP68. For outdoor installations in the UK, IP67 is the minimum recommended rating because it withstands temporary immersion and handles the rain, frost, and condensation typical of British weather. IP65 is surface-splash resistant only and is not suitable for most outdoor conditions or bathroom wet zones under BS7671 wiring regulations.

  • IP20 (indoor): No moisture protection. Suitable for dry interior applications — under-cabinet lighting, cove lighting, display cabinets. The most common choice for standard residential and commercial indoor installations.
  • IP65 (surface splash): Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Suitable for indoor areas with occasional moisture exposure (kitchen splashbacks behind glass). Not recommended for outdoor use or bathroom wet zones — despite being widely mis-sold as "outdoor rated" by some UK retailers in 2026.
  • IP67 (temporary immersion): Withstands temporary submersion to 1m for up to 30 minutes. The recommended minimum for UK outdoor garden lighting, decking installations, and bathroom zones 1 and 2. Browse outdoor-rated COB strip.
  • IP68 (continuous submersion): Rated for continuous submersion. Required for pond lighting, fountain features, pool surrounds, and fully exposed outdoor installations where the strip will be submerged or in constant contact with standing water.

When selecting IP-rated dot-free strip, verify that the IP rating applies to the entire assembly — including connectors and end caps — not just the strip body. A single unprotected connection point compromises the entire run's moisture resistance.

What mistakes do buyers make when choosing dot-free LED strip?

The most common mistakes are selecting the wrong voltage for the run length, using a dimmable driver with RGBW strip, skipping the aluminium profile on high-wattage runs, powering strip while still coiled on the reel, and choosing IP65 for outdoor installations where IP67 is the minimum safe rating for UK weather conditions. Each of these errors leads to either poor performance, premature failure, or a safety risk that could have been avoided.

  • Mistake 1 — Powering strip while coiled: Never test or operate any LED strip while it remains wound on the reel. The heat generated cannot dissipate, rapidly destroying the adhesive backing and creating a genuine fire risk. Always uncoil and mount the strip before powering on.
  • Mistake 2 — Mounting on bare metal: The underside of COB strip exposes copper PCB traces. Mounting directly onto a bare metal surface without insulation (such as the anodised interior of an aluminium profile) risks a short circuit. Always use the strip's 3M adhesive backing or an insulating tape layer between the strip and bare metal.
  • Mistake 3 — Using a dimmable driver with RGBW: This causes flicker, colour shift, and component failure. RGBW dot-free COB strip must be powered from a non-dimmable constant voltage driver, with dimming and colour control handled by a separate RGBW controller.
  • Mistake 4 — Choosing IP65 for outdoor UK use: IP65 is splash-proof only. UK outdoor conditions involve sustained rain, frost, and condensation that exceed IP65 protection. Specify IP67 minimum for any outdoor or bathroom wet zone installation.
  • Mistake 5 — Undersizing the driver: A driver running at full rated capacity overheats and fails prematurely. Always size the driver at 20% above the total connected strip wattage.
  • Mistake 6 — Series wiring on long runs: Wiring multiple strip lengths end-to-end in series multiplies voltage drop. Wire each strip run directly back to the driver in parallel — this is standard best practice for all DC LED strip installations.
  • Mistake 7 — Confusing "high density SMD" with dot-free: A 120 LED/m SMD strip is still not dot-free. The dots are closer together but remain individually visible because each LED sits in its own separate housing. Only COB technology eliminates dots entirely.

Frequently asked questions about dot-free COB LED strip

1. What does dot-free mean on LED strip lights?

  • Dot-free means: No visible individual LED dots or hotspots when the strip is viewed from normal distances.
  • COB technology achieves this: By mounting 320-720 LED dies per metre directly on the PCB under a continuous phosphor layer, eliminating the gaps between individually packaged SMD LEDs that cause the dot pattern.
  • The result: A single, smooth, continuous line of light rather than a series of bright spots separated by dark gaps.

2. Is dot-free the same as dotless LED strip?

  • Yes: Dot-free, dotless, and spotless are interchangeable terms used across the UK LED market in 2026 to describe the same COB technology result — a strip that produces no visible individual LED dots.
  • All three terms describe COB strip: No UK manufacturer currently offers a non-COB technology that achieves truly dot-free output.

3. Can you see dots on 480 LED/m COB strip without a diffuser?

  • At 480 LEDs/m and above: The dot-free effect holds even without a separate diffuser channel, because the chip spacing (approximately 2mm) is small enough that the continuous phosphor layer blends the light completely before it leaves the strip surface.
  • At 320 LEDs/m: A frosted diffuser is recommended for close-proximity applications (under 300mm viewing distance) to maintain perfectly even output.

4. Does dot-free COB strip need an aluminium profile?

  • For heat management: Yes, an aluminium profile is recommended for any COB strip rated at 14W/m or above, or for continuous runs over 5m, to dissipate heat and extend lifespan.
  • For dot-free performance: No — COB strip is dot-free with or without a profile. The profile adds mechanical protection and a polished aesthetic finish but is not required for the dot-free light output itself.

5. What is the maximum run length for dot-free COB strip?

  • 24V single colour: Up to 20m single-feed from one driver connection point.
  • 48V single colour: Up to 30m single-feed, or up to 50m with dual-end power injection.
  • Voltage drop caution: On any run approaching the maximum, verify brightness at the far end with a multimeter before final installation. Wire in parallel rather than series to minimise voltage drop across multiple runs.

6. Is dot-free COB strip brighter than SMD strip?

  • Brightness depends on wattage per metre, not technology type: A 14W/m COB strip and a 14W/m SMD strip produce approximately the same total light output (lumens per metre).
  • The perceived difference: COB strip appears more evenly bright because the light is distributed uniformly, while SMD strip concentrates output at individual LED locations, making the bright spots appear brighter and the gaps appear dimmer.

7. Can dot-free COB strip be used for under-cabinet kitchen lighting?

  • This is the most popular application in the UK residential market: Dot-free COB strip in warm white 3000K at 10-14W/m, mounted in a shallow aluminium profile with a frosted diffuser, produces the ideal task and ambient lighting combination for kitchen worktops.
  • Recommended specification: 24V or 48V, CRI90+, IP20, mounted in a surface or recessed profile under wall cabinets.

8. Does dot-free COB strip work with smart home systems?

  • Yes: Pair dot-free COB strip with a Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Wi-Fi compatible controller from MiBoxer, Skydance, or Ltech to enable voice control via Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit, and app-based scene setting and scheduling.
  • Driver requirement: Use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver and let the smart controller handle dimming via PWM.

9. What is FreeCut technology on ATOM LED COB strip?

  • FreeCut means: You can cut ATOM LED COB strip at any marked cut point along the reel to achieve the exact length required for your installation, without voiding the 5-year product warranty.
  • Why it matters: Many competitors void the warranty the moment you cut the strip, making precise on-site length matching a warranty risk. ATOM LED does not.

10. How does CRI90+ affect dot-free strip performance?

  • CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures: How accurately colours appear under the light source compared to natural daylight. CRI90+ means 90% or higher accuracy.
  • Practical benefit: Skin tones, food, wood grain, fabric, and paint colours all appear natural and true under CRI90+ lighting. Below CRI80, reds appear muted and skin tones look grey — noticeable in kitchens, bathrooms, retail, and hospitality settings.

11. Can I use dot-free COB strip outdoors in the UK?

  • Yes, but select the correct IP rating: IP67 minimum for outdoor garden lighting, decking, and patio areas. IP68 for ponds, fountains, and fully submerged applications.
  • Do not use IP65 outdoors: IP65 is surface-splash only and is not suitable for sustained UK weather conditions including rain, frost, and condensation.

12. What is the difference between COB and SMD LED strip?

  • COB (Chip on Board): LED dies are mounted directly on the PCB and covered with a single phosphor layer — producing dot-free, continuous light output at densities of 320-720 LEDs/m.
  • SMD (Surface Mount Device): Individual LED packages (2835, 5050, etc.) are soldered onto the PCB at 30-120 per metre. Each package creates a visible bright spot with dark gaps between — producing the characteristic dot pattern.

13. How do I choose between 24V and 48V dot-free COB strip?

  • Choose 24V for: Compact residential runs up to 10m, projects with existing 24V infrastructure, and applications using widely available 24V dimmers and controllers.
  • Choose 48V for: Runs over 10m, commercial fit-outs, multi-zone layouts, and projects where minimising voltage drop and wiring complexity is a priority.

14. Does dot-free COB strip produce heat?

  • Yes, all LED strip produces heat: Typically 60-70% of input power is converted to light and 30-40% to heat. At 14W/m, this is approximately 4-6W/m of heat that must be dissipated.
  • Heat management: Mount COB strip in an aluminium profile for runs over 5m or at wattages above 14W/m. The profile acts as a heatsink, extending strip lifespan and maintaining adhesive bond strength.
  • Coiled strip warning: Never power strip while still on the reel — heat cannot escape and will damage the strip within minutes.

15. What warranty does ATOM LED offer on dot-free COB strip?

  • 5-year warranty: Covers all COB DC voltage strip against manufacturing defects, LED failure, and phosphor degradation under normal use conditions.
  • FreeCut warranty: Cutting the strip at marked cut points does not void the warranty.
  • Warranty support: Contact the ATOM LED technical team on 01952 370028 or email operations@atomled.co.uk Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

16. Where can I get technical help choosing dot-free COB strip?

  • Phone: Call 01952 370028, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. Speak directly to a lighting specialist — not a call centre.
  • Email: Send your project details (room dimensions, run lengths, colour temperature preference, and dimming requirements) to operations@atomled.co.uk for a specification recommendation.
  • Browse online: View the full LED strip lights range or start with the dot-free COB strip collection.
