Quick decision summary: If your neon flex will be exposed to UK weather — rain, frost, ground splash, or humidity — you need IP67 minimum. If it will sit permanently underwater in a pond or fountain, you need IP68 neon flex instead. If it is fully sheltered indoors with no moisture contact, IP65 is sufficient. For most UK garden, patio, bathroom, and facade projects in 2026, IP67 is the correct specification.
Who this is for: Homeowners planning garden border lighting, patio perimeter runs, driveway edging, or bathroom accent lighting. Contractors specifying for commercial facades, hospitality outdoor areas, or bathroom refurbishments. Signage professionals who need weather-resistant neon flex for exterior lettering.
Who this is NOT for: If you need neon flex permanently submerged in water — ponds, fountains, swimming pool edges — IP67 is not rated for continuous submersion. You need IP68 fully submersible neon flex. If your installation is entirely indoors and dry, IP67 protection is more than you need and a standard indoor-rated neon flex will cost less.
Common buying mistakes to avoid:
IP67 is an ingress protection rating defined by IEC 60529, where the "6" confirms complete dust-tightness and the "7" confirms protection against temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes. For neon flex, this means the silicone extrusion and internal potting compound prevent any moisture reaching the LED strip inside, even during heavy rain, jet washing, or brief flooding.
The IP rating system uses two digits. The first digit (0–6) rates solid particle protection — dust, sand, debris. A rating of 6 is the maximum: completely dust-tight with zero ingress even under vacuum. The second digit (0–9) rates liquid protection. A rating of 7 means the product survives temporary immersion at up to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes without internal moisture ingress.
In practical UK terms, IP67 neon flex handles:
What IP67 does not cover: continuous submersion. A pond edge where the neon flex sits permanently below the water line, a fountain basin, or a swimming pool channel all require IP68 neon flex rated for continuous submersion.
IP67 neon flex is the correct specification for any UK installation exposed to weather, moisture, or humidity — including garden borders, patio perimeters, driveway edging, building facades, bathroom zones 0–2, and commercial outdoor signage. It is the most widely specified IP rating for outdoor neon flex projects across the UK in 2026.
The applications break into three broad categories: residential outdoor, bathroom and wet room, and commercial exterior.
IP65 handles surface splash only and is not suitable for exposed UK outdoor conditions — it typically fails within one winter. IP67 handles rain, frost, ground splash, and temporary immersion, making it correct for most outdoor and bathroom projects. IP68 handles continuous submersion for ponds, fountains, and underwater features. The rating you need depends entirely on water exposure.
| Specification | IP65 | IP67 | IP68 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dust protection | Complete (6) | Complete (6) | Complete (6) |
| Water protection | Low-pressure jets | Temporary immersion 1m / 30 min | Continuous submersion 1m+ |
| UK outdoor (exposed) | Not suitable | Correct specification | Exceeds requirement |
| UK outdoor (sheltered) | Marginal — risk of failure | Fully suitable | Exceeds requirement |
| Bathroom Zone 0 | Does not meet requirement | Meets requirement (with SELV) | Meets requirement (with SELV) |
| Bathroom Zone 1 | Meets minimum (IPX4) | Exceeds requirement | Exceeds requirement |
| Bathroom Zone 2 | Meets minimum (IPX4) | Exceeds requirement | Exceeds requirement |
| Ponds / fountains | Not suitable | Not suitable | Correct specification |
| Frost-cycle survival (silicone) | Limited | Yes — rated to -20°C | Yes — rated to -20°C |
| Typical UK price premium vs IP65 | Baseline | Approximately 15–25% more | Approximately 30–50% more |
| Recommended minimum for UK weather | No | Yes | Only if submersion needed |
The critical point for UK buyers in 2026: IP65 is marketed as "Waterproof" by many suppliers, but it is only rated for surface splash and low-pressure water jets. British weather delivers sustained heavy rain, frost cycling, standing water, and high humidity. IP65 neon flex exposed to these conditions typically fails within 6–12 months as moisture eventually breaches the seal. IP67 is the minimum reliable specification for any exposed outdoor neon flex installation in the UK.
If you need continuous submersion — pond edges, fountain basins, water feature channels — IP67 is not rated for that application. You need IP68 neon flex designed for permanent submersion.
Silicone IP67 neon flex remains flexible, UV-stable, and crack-resistant across the full UK temperature range from -20°C to +50°C. PVC neon flex hardens in cold weather, yellows within 12–18 months of UV exposure, and cracks after repeated frost-thaw cycles — allowing moisture ingress that destroys the LED strip inside. Material choice determines whether your IP67 rating lasts one winter or ten years.
| Property | Silicone IP67 | PVC IP67 |
|---|---|---|
| UV resistance | UV-stable — no yellowing over years | Yellows within 12–18 months |
| Operating temperature | -20°C to +50°C (some grades to -45°C) | Approximately 0°C to +40°C effective range |
| Frost-cycle behaviour | Remains flexible — no cracking | Hardens and cracks after repeated cycles |
| Flexibility at low temperature | Full flexibility maintained | Becomes rigid and brittle |
| Light transmission | Consistent diffusion over lifespan | Degrades as material yellows |
| Moisture ingress after 2 winters | Seal integrity maintained | Micro-cracks allow moisture entry |
| Expected outdoor lifespan (UK) | 8–12+ years | 1–3 years typically |
| Cost | Higher initial cost | Lower initial cost |
The failure mechanism in PVC is physical, not chemical. When temperatures drop below approximately 5°C, PVC stiffens. When frost arrives, any residual flex in the material is lost entirely. As the temperature rises during the day, the PVC expands. This daily contraction-expansion cycle creates micro-fractures along the extrusion surface. After 20–40 frost cycles — a typical UK winter — those micro-fractures breach the Waterproof seal. Moisture enters, reaches the LED strip, and corrosion begins on the solder points and copper traces.
Silicone does not exhibit this behaviour. Its molecular structure allows flex recovery across a temperature range of approximately -20°C to +50°C without fatigue. The silicone extrusion returns to its original shape after each temperature cycle, maintaining seal integrity indefinitely under normal UK conditions.
ATOM LED uses UV-stable silicone construction across the IP67 neon flex range. If you are comparing products from different suppliers, always confirm the extrusion material. A "Waterproof" rating on a PVC product is technically accurate at point of manufacture but does not reflect real-world UK outdoor performance over multiple seasons.
IP67 neon flex meets or exceeds the IP requirements for all four UK bathroom zones under BS7671 wiring regulations. Zone 0 (inside bath or shower tray) requires IP67 minimum plus SELV supply at a maximum of 12V. Zones 1 and 2 require IP44/IP45 minimum — IP67 significantly exceeds both. The area outside all zones has no IP requirement, so IP67 is fully compliant everywhere in a UK bathroom.
For practical bathroom installations in 2026, IP67 neon flex is the most popular specification because it provides a single product solution for every zone. Rather than specifying different IP ratings for different bathroom areas, a single IP67 neon flex run with a 24V SELV-rated driver covers the entire bathroom without zone boundary concerns.
All bathroom electrical work must be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent person in accordance with BS7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations. IP67 neon flex meets the product specification requirements — but correct installation, circuit protection, and driver selection are equally critical for compliance.
Choose 24V IP67 neon flex for residential projects with runs up to 20 metres from a single feed point — gardens, patios, bathrooms, and standard room perimeters. Choose 48V for commercial facades, long driveway borders, or any project exceeding 20 metres, where 48V supports up to 30m single-feed and 50m dual-feed with significantly less voltage drop. The voltage determines maximum run length, not brightness or colour quality.
Voltage drop is the practical limiter. At 24V, a neon flex run beyond 20 metres begins to show visible dimming at the far end as resistance in the copper conductors reduces the voltage delivered to the LEDs. At 48V, the same wattage draws half the current, so the same copper conductors lose half the voltage over the same distance. This is physics, not marketing — it applies to every 24V and 48V product regardless of brand.
For outdoor IP67 installations specifically, always match the driver voltage exactly and ensure the driver is also IP67 rated for outdoor use. A 24V IP67 neon flex paired with an indoor IP20 driver defeats the entire waterproofing purpose. Browse LED transformers and drivers to find correctly rated power supplies for your installation.
If your project requires colour-changing capability, RGB and RGBW IP67 neon flex runs on non-dimmable constant voltage drivers paired with a dedicated RGB controller. Using a dimmable driver with RGB or RGBW neon flex causes flicker, colour shift, and premature failure.
Outdoor IP67 neon flex installation requires five key steps: plan the route and measure accurately, mount the neon flex into a profile or onto a clean surface using appropriate clips, make Waterproof connections at both ends using IP-rated connectors and RTV silicone sealant, connect to an outdoor-rated IP67 driver with drip loops on all cable entries, and test the full circuit before final sealing. Correct installation preserves the IP67 rating for the life of the product.
For parallel wiring on multi-run installations, feed each neon flex run independently back to the driver rather than daisy-chaining from one run to the next. Parallel wiring ensures each run receives full voltage regardless of total system length. This is particularly important for garden schemes with multiple border runs fed from a single outdoor power supply.
Cutting IP67 neon flex exposes the internal LED strip and copper conductors at the cut point, immediately removing Waterproof protection at that end. You must reseal every cut end with a matched silicone end cap bonded using RTV silicone adhesive before installing outdoors or in wet areas. Generic tape, hot glue, and standard bathroom sealant do not provide reliable long-term IP67 sealing.
ATOM LED IP67 neon flex features cut to length at marked intervals — you can cut at any marked point without voiding the warranty. However, cutting creates an obligation to reseal. The factory-sealed ends and extrusion body remain IP67 after cutting, but the new cut end is fully exposed.
For wired connections where power feeds exit the cut end, use IP67-rated end caps with integrated wire leads, then seal the wire exit with RTV silicone. Every connection joint in an outdoor IP67 system must maintain the same ingress protection level as the neon flex body itself. Browse neon flex accessories for compatible end caps, connectors, and sealants.

My order was all dealt with very carefully and professionally
Takes a little time to check and setup but worked with their CCt controllers straight away. Simple to use and adjust light settings which was one of the reasons to stick with white. As for longevity, not sure if the unit holds last settings if the batteries need changing. We'll see.
Thanks.
Great high quality led looks great at night
Very happy with the purchase. Quality connectors and hassle-free setup.
I was searching for good quality LED rope lights and came across Atom. I ordered 50 mtrs reel of RGBW lights and the item was delivered very quickly and the after sales service has been second to none. Adam has very been helpful with my enquiries every time I have called and it's never to much for him to assist. I would definitely recommend buying from Atom and definitely will do again on my next project.
I ordered a specific lengths of ip68 warm white led neon strip for my drive. I installed it as I had installed my other led feature lighting from ATOM and the result was great. Delivered in less than 48hrs the strip was exactly the right length as I had specified. The quality is exceptional and easy to install. The end result justifies the investment and their prices are vey good. Can’t fault them and highly recommend. I will be back for more strip as I have further ideas around my house. Thanks Atom!
I ordered 2 controllers for a time-critical installation where I needed to confirm everything was working before completion. I placed the order and the items arrived early the next morning and in time for the installation to be completed! Very grateful for the swift response and attention.
Good LED strip for outdoor application and good advice from the Atom team. Thanks!
