What do you need to install LED strip lights?
Six things: LED strip cut to your run lengths, a 24V driver sized to the load, an aluminium profile with diffuser for each run, connectors or extension cable, a screwdriver and IPA surface cleaner. Add a TRIAC dimmable driver if a wall dimmer will control it.

How do you plan and measure the runs?
Walk the job with a tape measure and write a run list: each length to the centimetre, its zone, and its colour temperature. Group runs that switch together onto one driver, and note where the driver itself will hide — a cupboard, a void, or behind a hatch with ventilation.
Two planning habits save most call-outs. First, measure to the centimetre and order to the centimetre — guessing "about five metres" is how offcuts and shortfalls happen. Second, decide control before you buy: a wall-dimmer circuit needs different hardware to an app-controlled zone, and mixing them later means swapping drivers.
How do you size the LED driver?
Multiply strip wattage per metre by total metres, then add 20% headroom. A 10W/m strip over 6 metres draws 60W — fit at least a 75W driver. An undersized driver runs hot and fails early; oversized costs nothing in efficiency.

How do you cut LED strip lights?
Only at the marked cutting points — the printed line across the copper pads, typically every 25–100mm depending on the strip. Cut square across the middle of the pads with sharp scissors. Cutting anywhere else severs the internal circuit and kills that section.

How do you connect LED strip lights to mains power in the UK?
Never wire strip directly to the mains. The 240V side feeds the driver — via a plug and socket, or a switched fused spur fitted by an electrician — and the strip connects only to the driver's 24V output, positive to positive, negative to negative.

Two safety rules we repeat on every order: never power a strip while it is still coiled on the reel, and never mount strip on bare metal without the profile between them. Both cause overheating; coiled strip can be a fire risk.
How do you mount the strips — adhesive or profile?
Seat the strip inside an aluminium profile and fix the profile, rather than trusting tape alone. The profile pulls heat out of the strip — extending its life — hides the source behind a diffuser, and screws stay fixed where adhesive on a warm cabinet eventually lets go.

Where you do use the adhesive backing, wipe the surface with IPA first and work above 16°C; dust and kitchen grease are why strips sag six months in. Press along the run — never stretch the strip while placing it.
Where should strips sit under kitchen cabinets?
In the front third of the cabinet underside, 25–50mm back from the face, angled light washing the worktop and splashback evenly. Choose 4000K natural white for task light over worktops; 2700K warm white where the kitchen opens into living space.
What IP rating do you need in each room?
IP20 for dry interiors, IP65 for splash zones only, IP67 for bathroom wet zones and outdoor gardens, IP68 where strip sits in standing water. IP65 is not an outdoor rating in UK conditions — that mistake shows up in our support inbox every winter.

How do you install LED strips on stairs and in bathrooms?
Stairs: one short run per tread or a continuous run along the stringer, wired in parallel to a single driver at the top or bottom — at 10% brightness it doubles as a night light. Bathrooms: IP67 strip in the wet zones, the driver always outside the zones, and follow BS7671 zoning with your electrician.
Tread lighting works best recessed into an angled profile under the tread nosing so the light grazes the step without glaring up at anyone climbing. In bathrooms, mirror backlighting and under-vanity glows are the two upgrades customers rate most — both use the same IP67 strip and a diffused profile to stop condensation spotting the light line.
How do you prevent voltage drop on long runs?
Wire runs in parallel back to the driver rather than daisy-chaining end to end, and match voltage to distance: 24V single colour runs up to 20 metres from one feed; 48V runs up to 40 metres, because voltage drop happens at half the rate. Visible dimming at the far end means the feed layout is wrong, not the strip.
How do you dim LED strip lights without flicker?
Single-colour strip dims from a wall dimmer only through a TRIAC dimmable driver paired with a trailing-edge dimmer — leading-edge dimmers cause the flicker. Colour-changing strip dims through its controller and needs a non-dimmable driver; never put a wall dimmer in front of an RGB system.
What are the most common installation mistakes?
- Cutting off the marked line: kills the section. Cut on the copper pads or order pre-cut.
- Driver sized to the exact load: no headroom means heat and early failure — always add 20%.
- Daisy-chaining long runs: causes dim, yellowed far ends. Parallel-feed every run.
- Bare adhesive on greasy or cold surfaces: IPA wipe, above 16°C, or use profiles.
- Leading-edge dimmers: flicker every time. Trailing-edge with a TRIAC driver — the fix costs about £15.
