Description

MaxiFlex Extra Long 48V — the trade-grade specification. When the install crosses 20 metres in a single sweep, 24V hits voltage drop limits and you need parallel feeds. 48V solves that with one feed. It can do a 40 metre continuous run from one-side power, with no visible voltage drop. Built for commercial outdoor, large-residential perimeters, and any landscape install where simple single-feed wiring matters more than incremental cut precision.

10cm (100mm) cut intervals. 8x16mm IP67 silicone — same construction quality as the rest of the MaxiFlex range, only the voltage and cut interval scale with the use case. 9W per metre, 120 LEDs per metre, 690 lumens per metre, CRI above 80. Designed for permanent UK outdoor installation across the full -30°C to +50°C operating envelope.

Trade applications where 48V wins

Long driveway perimeters: a long-rural driveway from gate to property may run 30-40m one-way. 48V handles it from a single power point. 24V would need a mid-run driver buried in a junction box — extra labour, extra failure surface.

Estate boundary lighting: high-end residential estates with 40-50m perimeter walls. Two 48V reels with a corner crossover handles the full perimeter — clean single light line, minimal driver count.

Hospitality and commercial outdoor: restaurant terrace surrounds, hotel poolside framing, retail forecourt perimeters. Trade specifications generally favour 48V for its single-feed simplicity and reduced point-of-failure count.

Architectural facade lines: long horizontal architectural detail on commercial buildings — fascia accents, soffit underlining, security-perimeter wall washes. 40m reels reduce visible joins.

The 48V specification advantage

Voltage drop is proportional to the square of current at fixed power. Doubling voltage from 24V to 48V halves the current at the same wattage, so resistive losses drop by a factor of four. That's why a 24V system maxes at ~20m and 48V doubles to ~40m on the same conductor.

The trade-off: at 48V the LEDs are wired in series-of-two on the PCB, so cut points come every 10cm rather than every 5cm or 1cm. This is fine for landscape and commercial work where the run is long and the cut precision matters less than the single-feed distance.

Install detail for 48V trade installs

Driver sizing for 40m: 40 × 9W = 360W draw. With the 1.2 safety multiplier you need 432W — round up to 480W or 500W 48V driver. Mean Well HEP-480-48 fits this exactly with appropriate IP-rated housing for outdoor mounting.

Cut points: every 10cm (100mm). The series-of-two LED arrangement at 48V means each cut point releases a pair of LEDs. Cut only on marks — between marks shorts the pair and voids the IP67 end-cap seal.

Bend radius: 15mm horizontal minimum, horizontal-bend only. Same physical profile as the 24V range — fully compatible with our 8x16mm aluminium landscape channels.

BS7671 and SELV: 48V DC sits within Separated Extra Low Voltage thresholds (BS7671 18th Edition) when supplied from a properly isolated low-voltage driver. Install by qualified competent person — never bypass the driver to mains.

Cable run sizing: for 48V driver-to-strip cable runs over 5m, use 1.5mm² minimum to keep voltage drop on the supply leg negligible.

For UK country homes and larger residential estates

Detached homes with substantial gardens, country residences, and rural properties where the install spans 25-40m or more. 48V removes the parallel-feed complexity at this scale:

Country garden boundaries: rural property fence-lines, traditional hedge-line borders, and stone-wall perimeters on detached country homes — typical 30-40m runs from a single corner driver.

Long driveway-to-garden continuous runs: properties where the lighting starts at the gate, follows the driveway, wraps round the house, and continues into the rear patio — all on one unbroken light line.

Estate-style perimeter lighting: full-perimeter lighting on substantial detached homes, gated properties, and homes with formal front-and-rear garden schemes.

Larger residential entertaining zones: homes with wedding-licence gardens, marquee zones, and substantial outdoor entertainment areas where one continuous 40m run replaces several short ones.

Colour selection for trade outdoor specs

2700K — deep amber. Hospitality, restaurant, evening trade outdoor.

3000K — warm white. Default residential and standard commercial.

4000K — neutral. Modern commercial, contemporary residential, security-trim accent.

6000K — daylight cool. Commercial, security perimeters, premises with colour-accurate rendering requirements.

Need a shorter run or finer cut?

MaxiFlex 24V — 1cm cut, 15m: precision-cut format for fine landscape detail and driveway corners.

MaxiFlex Extra Long 24V — 5cm cut, 20m: standard mid-range — typical residential driveways and garden perimeters.

Custom-cut to your specification, IP67-resealed at our facility, UK-wide trade dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IP65, IP67, and IP68?

IP65 handles surface splashes only and is not suitable for UK outdoor conditions or bathroom wet zones under BS7671. IP67 is rated for temporary immersion and covers outdoor garden installations, most bathroom zones, and exposed architectural features. IP68 handles continuous submersion for ponds, fountains, and fully exposed outdoor applications. For most UK garden and decking projects, IP67 is the correct choice.

Can I cut this product to a custom length?

Yes. ATOM LED products can be cut at the marked cut points without voiding the warranty. Many competitors restrict cuts to 50–100mm intervals, which wastes offcuts on tight custom runs. Use sharp scissors or a craft knife for a clean cut, then seal the end with a suitable end cap.

What size driver do I need?

Multiply the total metres by the wattage per metre, then add 20% headroom. For example: 10 metres of 24V neon flex at 9W/m = 90W total, so you need a minimum 108W driver. Never load a driver above 80% capacity for long-term reliability.

Should I choose 12V, 24V, or 48V?

Choose 12V for caravans, cars, boats, and any project powered by a 12V battery. Choose 24V for most home and trade installs where you need dependable run length with lower voltage drop. Choose 48V for longer architectural runs where extra distance and single-feed flexibility matter. For underwater or submerged installs, use IP68 Waterproof lights and the correct driver for that product; do not use 48V underwater.

What is your warranty?

ATOM LED offers product-specific warranties: up to 7 years on single-colour COB strip, 5 years on RGB and RGBW COB strip, and 4 years on LED neon flex. The warranty covers manufacturing defects. Call 01952 370028 for warranty claims.
