24V Triac Dimmable Driver

A 24V TRIAC dimmable driver lets you dim single-colour LED strip from a standard wall dimmer switch — no separate controller needed. If you are replacing halogen under-cabinet lights or adding dimmable COB strip to a kitchen, bedroom, or living space, this is the driver type you need. Pair it with a trailing-edge dimmer for smooth, flicker-free output from 0 to 100 percent.

What is a 24V TRIAC dimmable LED driver?

A 24V TRIAC dimmable driver is a constant-voltage power supply that accepts a phase-cut dimming signal from a mains dimmer switch, converting 230V AC input to a smooth 24V DC output. It allows you to control brightness directly from a wall-mounted dimmer without needing a separate LED controller or remote.

TRIAC dimming works by cutting part of the AC waveform before it reaches the driver. Trailing-edge dimmers cut the falling edge of the wave, which produces smoother dimming with less flicker than leading-edge types. The trailing-edge upgrade typically costs around £15 and solves the majority of LED dimming problems in UK homes.

When should you use a TRIAC dimmable driver instead of a non-dimmable one?

Use a TRIAC dimmable driver when you want to control single-colour LED strip brightness from a wall dimmer switch. Use a non-dimmable driver when running RGB, RGBW, or addressable strip — these require a dedicated controller, and dimmable drivers cause flicker, colour shift, and premature failure with multi-channel strip.

  • Single colour + wall dimmer: TRIAC dimmable driver + trailing-edge dimmer.
  • Single colour + no dimming: Non-dimmable driver (cheaper, simpler).
  • RGB/RGBW/addressable: Non-dimmable driver + dedicated RGB controller. Never use a dimmable driver.

How do you size a 24V TRIAC dimmable driver correctly?

Multiply the wattage per metre of your LED strip by the total length in metres, then add 20 percent headroom. For example, a 5-metre run of 14.4W/m strip draws 72W total — select a minimum 86W driver. Running a driver at or above its rated capacity shortens its lifespan and can cause dimming instability.

  • Step 1: Check the strip wattage per metre on the product page.
  • Step 2: Multiply by total metres of strip.
  • Step 3: Add 20% headroom (multiply by 1.2).
  • Step 4: Select the next driver size up from your calculated wattage.

What is the difference between trailing-edge and leading-edge dimmers?

Trailing-edge dimmers are compatible with most LED drivers and produce smooth, flicker-free dimming. Leading-edge dimmers were designed for halogen and incandescent loads — they frequently cause LED flicker, buzzing, and limited dimming range. Replacing a leading-edge dimmer with a trailing-edge model costs approximately £15 and fixes most LED dimming issues.

Which IP rating do you need for your 24V dimmable driver?

IP20 drivers are suitable for dry indoor locations such as ceiling voids, cupboards, and furniture cavities. IP67 drivers are required for outdoor installations, bathrooms, and any location exposed to moisture or condensation. Never install an IP20 driver in a bathroom or outdoor enclosure.

IP Rating Environment Typical Use
IP20 Dry indoor Kitchen cupboards, ceiling voids, furniture
IP67 Outdoor / wet Gardens, bathrooms, covered patios

Can you use a 24V TRIAC driver with COB LED strip?

Yes — ATOM LED 24V COB strip is fully compatible with 24V TRIAC dimmable drivers when used with single-colour strip only. The combination of a trailing-edge dimmer, TRIAC dimmable driver, and CRI90+ COB strip delivers the smoothest residential dimming available in 2026. Avoid using TRIAC dimmable drivers with RGBW COB strip.

Frequently asked questions — 24V TRIAC dimmable drivers

  • Can I use a 24V TRIAC driver with 12V strip?
    • No. The driver voltage must match the strip voltage exactly. A 24V driver on 12V strip will destroy the LEDs immediately.
  • Why does my LED strip flicker when dimmed?
    • The most common cause is a leading-edge dimmer. Replace it with a trailing-edge dimmer (approximately £15). Also check that the driver minimum load is met — some TRIAC drivers require a minimum wattage to dim smoothly.
  • What is the minimum load for a TRIAC dimmable driver?
    • Most TRIAC drivers require a minimum load of 10 to 20 percent of their rated capacity to dim without flicker. Check the driver datasheet for the specific minimum load figure.
  • Can I wire multiple strip runs to one TRIAC driver?
    • Yes, using parallel wiring. Wire each strip run directly back to the driver output terminals. The total wattage of all runs must not exceed 80 percent of the driver rated capacity.
  • Do ATOM LED 24V TRIAC drivers come with a warranty?
    • Warranty varies by driver model. Check the individual product page for the exact warranty period. Call 01952 370028 or email sales@atomled.co.uk for model-specific terms.
  • Where should I mount the driver?
    • Mount the driver in a ventilated space with adequate airflow. Ceiling voids, cupboard interiors, and dedicated driver enclosures all work. Never seal a driver inside an airtight space as heat will shorten its lifespan.
  • Can I use a 24V TRIAC driver outdoors?
    • Only if the driver is IP67 rated. IP20 drivers must be installed indoors in dry locations only.
  • Does ATOM LED offer free delivery on drivers?
    • Yes. ATOM LED offers free UK delivery on 97% of products. Drivers are held in UK stock at our Telford warehouse and typically arrive in 1 to 3 working days.

LED Flex

Excellent product, Kabir was a great help pre-purchase ensuring that we purchased the appropriate flex. There are plenty of other LED’s on the market, we were keen not to be tempted by Amazon and I’m confident that we made the correct choice, would fully recommend.
