Description

The 48V long-run answer. When your decking project crosses 20 metres in a single sweep, 24V hits voltage-drop limits and you need parallel feeds. 48V solves that — half the voltage drop at the same wattage, twice the safe single-feed distance. Run the entire perimeter of a large deck or full-house garden boundary from one driver location.

It can do a 40 metre continuous run from one-side power, with no visible voltage drop. Cut at every 10cm (100mm) mark. 6x12mm IP67 silicone. 9W per metre, 120 LEDs per metre, 690 lumens per metre. Built for permanent UK outdoor exposure with the same materials and warranty as the 24V range — only the voltage doubles.

When 48V earns its place over 24V

Deck perimeters past 20m: a 6m × 8m deck = 28m perimeter. A 24V product would need two parallel feeds to cover it. 48V handles it on a single feed with a single corner driver.

Garden boundary lighting: typical UK detached/semi-detached gardens have 25-40m of fence-line or hedge-line border. 48V covers it in one piece.

Driveways combined with decking: if the same install runs from driveway edge through to deck step, 48V keeps it as one unbroken light line — no driver mid-run, no visible cable junction.

Commercial outdoor: hospitality decks, restaurant terraces, retail forecourts. Trade installs typically need single-feed simplicity and the 48V format meets specification more cleanly than parallel 24V feeds.

The voltage drop maths

At 24V, voltage drop reaches 10% (the practical limit) at around 20m for 9W/m strips. Beyond that you need a second feed from the opposite end. At 48V the same wattage runs at half the current, so resistive losses fall by a factor of four — the practical limit doubles to 40m on a single feed.

This is why 48V costs slightly more per metre — the LED chips are wired in series of two for 48V tolerance, the driver class is broader, and the cabling can run thinner for the same current carrying.

Install notes for 48V

Driver sizing for a 40m run: 40 × 9W = 360W. With the 1.2 multiplier you need 432W — round up to 480W or 500W 48V driver. Mean Well HEP-480-48 fits this exactly.

10cm cut points: the bigger interval reflects the LED chip series-of-two arrangement at 48V. Each cut point releases two LEDs, not one. Cut only at marks. End-caps must be IP67-resealed by us if cut yourself.

Bend radius and profile: 15mm minimum, horizontal only. Same 6x12mm aluminium channels as the 24V range — fully compatible.

Compliance and safety: 48V DC sits within BS7671 SELV thresholds when supplied from a properly isolated low-voltage driver. Install per 18th Edition by a competent person. Never wire to mains direct.

For larger UK homes and mature gardens

Detached properties with substantial outdoor spaces — wraparound patios, mature L-shaped gardens, and country homes — benefit from 48V's single-feed range. Where 24V hits its 20m limit and forces parallel feeds, the 40m run keeps the install simple:

Wraparound patios on detached houses: L-shaped and U-shaped patios on detached homes typically run 28-40m round the perimeter. One 40m reel handles it in one continuous, unbroken light line.

Country garden boundaries: rural and semi-rural properties with long rear-fence or hedge-line runs. 48V drives these from the house corner to the back of the plot from a single feed.

Mature, established gardens: heritage gardens, walled gardens, and Victorian-style plots with extensive perimeter borders, pathways, and feature surrounds.

Pool, pond, and water-feature integration: larger water features with full-perimeter lighting tied into the patio scheme — one continuous run from pool edge to patio surround.

Colour temperature for outdoor scale installs

2700K — deep amber for hospitality decks, restaurants, and feature gardens where warmth dominates.

3000K — soft warm white. The default for large residential decking and garden boundaries.

4000K — neutral white. Specified for modern composite-decking properties and contemporary garden architecture.

6000K — cool daylight. Commercial outdoor, security accent, premises where colour rendering accuracy beats mood.

Need a shorter run?

Decking LED Lights 24V — 1cm cut, 15m: precision cut for stair nosings and narrow boards.

Decking LED Lights 24V — 5cm cut, 20m: the standard mid-range option for typical decking under 20m.

Every order is custom-cut to your exact metre count, IP67-resealed at the end, and dispatched ready for the install team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IP65, IP67, and IP68?

IP65 handles surface splashes only and is not suitable for UK outdoor conditions or bathroom wet zones under BS7671. IP67 is rated for temporary immersion and covers outdoor garden installations, most bathroom zones, and exposed architectural features. IP68 handles continuous submersion for ponds, fountains, and fully exposed outdoor applications. For most UK garden and decking projects, IP67 is the correct choice.

Can I cut this product to a custom length?

Yes. ATOM LED products can be cut at the marked cut points without voiding the warranty. Many competitors restrict cuts to 50–100mm intervals, which wastes offcuts on tight custom runs. Use sharp scissors or a craft knife for a clean cut, then seal the end with a suitable end cap.

What size driver do I need?

Multiply the total metres by the wattage per metre, then add 20% headroom. For example: 10 metres of 24V neon flex at 9W/m = 90W total, so you need a minimum 108W driver. Never load a driver above 80% capacity for long-term reliability.

Should I choose 12V, 24V, or 48V?

Choose 12V for caravans, cars, boats, and any project powered by a 12V battery. Choose 24V for most home and trade installs where you need dependable run length with lower voltage drop. Choose 48V for longer architectural runs where extra distance and single-feed flexibility matter. For underwater or submerged installs, use IP68 Waterproof lights and the correct driver for that product; do not use 48V underwater.

What is your warranty?

ATOM LED offers product-specific warranties: up to 7 years on single-colour COB strip, 5 years on RGB and RGBW COB strip, and 4 years on LED neon flex. The warranty covers manufacturing defects. Call 01952 370028 for warranty claims.
