Quick decision summary: If you need outdoor neon flex for a garden, patio, or facade exposed to rain, frost, and UV — choose IP67 minimum in UV-stable silicone. If the installation involves ponds, fountains, or areas where standing water collects, choose IP68. If your run length exceeds 20 metres, use 48V to reduce voltage drop. Never install IP65 neon flex in exposed UK outdoor conditions — it will fail.
Who this is for: Homeowners, landscapers, architects, and contractors installing permanent exterior neon flex lighting that must withstand year-round British weather — rain, frost, snow, wind, and sustained UV exposure.
Who this is NOT for: If you only need temporary indoor decorative neon, this page is not for you — browse the main neon flex range instead. If you specifically need submersible lighting for ponds or fountains, go directly to IP68 fully submersible neon flex. If you need decking-specific channel and lighting, see neon flex decking lights.
Common buying mistakes to avoid in 2026:
For any outdoor neon flex installation exposed to British weather, IP67 is the minimum safe rating. IP65 is splash-proof only and is not suitable for sustained rain, frost, or standing water under BS7671. IP68 is required for installations near ponds, fountains, or areas where continuous water submersion occurs. The correct IP rating prevents premature failure and protects your investment.
IP ratings measure ingress protection against solids (first digit) and liquids (second digit). The distinction between IP65, IP67, and IP68 matters enormously for UK outdoor use because British weather does not deliver gentle splashes — it delivers sustained downpours, standing puddles, frost heave, and months of persistent damp.
| IP Rating | Solid Protection | Water Protection | UK Outdoor Suitability | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Surface splash only | NOT suitable for exposed outdoor use | Indoor, sheltered canopies only |
| IP67 | Dust-tight | Temporary immersion to 1m for 30 minutes | Suitable for most UK outdoor conditions | Gardens, facades, fences, pergolas, steps |
| IP68 | Dust-tight | Continuous submersion beyond 1m | Required for water features and full exposure | Ponds, fountains, coastal, ground-recessed |
Approximately 70% of outdoor neon flex failures reported to UK suppliers trace back to one cause: IP65 product installed in exposed conditions. The product performs exactly as rated — it handles splashes — but UK weather delivers far more than splashes. Frost cycles cause micro-expansion inside unsealed joints, rain sits in channels and pooling points, and persistent humidity corrodes contacts over months.
Browse the dedicated IP67 Waterproof neon flex collection for the most popular outdoor rating, or see IP68 submersible neon flex for water features and full-exposure installations.
Silicone outdoor neon flex is UV-stable, frost-resistant, and flexible across a temperature range of approximately -40°C to +80°C — it does not yellow, crack, or become brittle in UK weather. PVC neon flex costs less upfront but degrades from UV exposure within 12–18 months outdoors, cracks during frost cycles, and is not suitable for permanent exterior installations in the UK climate.
This is the single most important material decision for any outdoor neon flex project in 2026. The body material determines whether your installation looks clean and performs reliably for 10+ years or degrades visibly within the first winter.
| Property | Silicone Neon Flex | PVC Neon Flex |
|---|---|---|
| UV stability | UV-stable — no yellowing over years of exposure | Yellows within 12–18 months of UV exposure |
| Temperature range | Approximately -40°C to +80°C | Approximately -10°C to +50°C |
| Frost resistance | Remains flexible through frost cycles | Becomes brittle, prone to cracking |
| Colour retention | Maintains optical clarity for 50,000+ hours | Clouding and chromatic shift from UV/ozone |
| Flexibility at low temp | Remains pliable at -20°C and below | Stiffens significantly below 0°C |
| Fire rating | Typically self-extinguishing (UL94 V-0) | Varies — many PVC products lack formal rating |
| Typical lifespan outdoors | 10–17 years at 8 hours/day | 1–3 years before visible degradation |
| Cost | Higher per metre | Lower per metre |
The physics behind PVC failure is well understood. Ultraviolet radiation breaks polymer chains in PVC, causing the surface to cloud, yellow, and eventually crack. In cold weather, PVC loses plasticiser flexibility and becomes rigid — when frost cycles cause micro-expansion and contraction, rigid PVC cracks. Silicone does not suffer from either failure mode because its molecular structure is inherently UV-stable and remains elastic across a far wider temperature range.
ATOM LED uses professional-grade UV-stable silicone across the outdoor neon flex range. For the full breakdown of silicone body and diffuser options, see the silicone neon flex body and cover collection.
For outdoor runs up to 20 metres on a single feed, 24V is reliable and cost-effective. For runs exceeding 20 metres, 48V is the correct choice — voltage drop occurs at half the rate of 24V over the same distance. For plug-and-play runs up to 50 metres in sheltered locations, 220V/240V mains neon flex works, but it is limited to IP65 and must not be used in exposed outdoor conditions.
Voltage choice directly affects brightness consistency across your installation. Voltage drop causes the far end of a run to appear visibly dimmer and can shift colour temperature — warm white starts to look cold and uneven. This is the most common quality complaint on long outdoor runs, and it is entirely preventable by choosing the correct voltage.
For outdoor projects requiring colour-changing capability, RGBW neon flex at 24V requires a dedicated RGB controller — not a standard dimmer. Dimmable drivers cause flicker, colour shift, and premature failure on RGB and RGBW products. Use a non-dimmable constant voltage driver paired with an appropriate controller. Browse the controller range for compatible options.
Installing outdoor neon flex requires planning the layout, selecting the correct IP-rated driver, cutting at designated marks only, sealing every connection with end caps and neutral-cure silicone, mounting in aluminium profiles or stainless clips, and connecting through IP-rated junction boxes with drip loops. Typical garden installations take 2–4 hours depending on run length and mounting surface.
This step-by-step process covers a standard outdoor garden or facade installation. Every step applies to IP67 and IP68 neon flex products from ATOM LED in 2026.

Cheap outdoor neon flex fails because it uses PVC body material that cracks in frost and yellows from UV exposure, IP65 ratings that cannot withstand sustained UK rain, thin PCB boards that fracture during temperature cycling, and poorly sealed end caps that allow water ingress into the circuitry. These failures are predictable and avoidable by choosing the correct specification from the outset.
Understanding why cheap neon flex fails helps you recognise what to look for — and what to avoid — when buying outdoor neon flex in 2026. The failure modes are well documented and consistent across budget products from unbranded overseas suppliers.
The ATOM LED outdoor neon flex range uses UV-stable silicone bodies, properly sealed end caps, flexible PCB construction rated for outdoor temperature cycling, and carries a 4-year warranty. The upfront cost per metre is higher than budget alternatives, but the total cost over 5 years is significantly lower because the product does not need replacing.
Every outdoor neon flex installation requires a constant voltage driver matched to the strip voltage (24V or 48V), rated at 120–130% of the total strip wattage to provide safe headroom, and housed in an IP67-rated enclosure for outdoor use. Never run an outdoor driver at full rated capacity — it overheats, hums audibly, and fails prematurely. The driver is the heart of the system and the most common point of premature failure when undersized.
Sizing your driver correctly is one of the most important decisions in any outdoor neon flex project. Here is the calculation method used by professional installers across the UK in 2026.

Every cut end must be sealed with the manufacturer end cap, a correctly seated gasket, and neutral-cure silicone around the cap edge. Every connection joint must be encapsulated with adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing or resin potting. Cable entries into junction boxes require IP-rated cable glands with drip loops. Water ingress at connections is the number one cause of outdoor neon flex failure — not the neon flex tube itself.
The neon flex tube is inherently Waterproof to its rated IP level. Every failure point is at a cut end, a join, or a cable entry. This is the detail that separates a 10-year installation from a 10-month one.
This sealing discipline is non-negotiable for any outdoor installation. Contact the ATOM LED technical team at operations@atomled.co.uk if you need advice on sealing accessories for your specific product.
Outdoor neon flex creates continuous smooth light lines for garden borders, fence tops, pergola outlines, facade accents, step edges, pathway markers, driveway borders, wall washes, arch highlights, and patio perimeters. The flexible silicone body bends to minimum radii of approximately 50–80mm depending on profile size, making it suitable for curves, corners, and architectural contours that rigid lighting cannot follow.
The visual effect of neon flex is distinct from LED strip — it produces a smooth, continuous glow with no visible dot pattern, replicating the look of traditional glass neon without the fragility, high voltage, or maintenance cost. This makes it the preferred choice for visible feature lighting where the light source itself is part of the design.
For custom neon sign making using outdoor-rated neon flex, ATOM LED supplies the profiles, connectors, and technical guidance to create weather-resistant signage that lasts.
Quality silicone outdoor neon flex with proper IP67 or IP68 rating typically delivers 30,000 to 50,000 hours of operation. At 8 hours daily use, that equates to approximately 10–17 years of service life. Actual lifespan depends on UV exposure levels, temperature extremes, installation quality, driver sizing, and how well connections are sealed. PVC neon flex in the same conditions typically shows visible degradation within 12–18 months.
Lifespan figures always require context. The 50,000-hour rating refers to the LED chips maintaining at least 70% of their original brightness (known as L70 in the industry). The neon flex body, connections, and driver all have their own lifespan profiles that affect the overall installation longevity.
The ATOM LED 4-year warranty on outdoor neon flex covers manufacturing defects in the LED strip and silicone body. Damage caused by incorrect installation, undersized drivers, or improper sealing is not covered — which is why following the installation steps in section 4 matters.
The five most common outdoor neon flex installation mistakes in 2026 are: using IP65 in exposed locations, running drivers at full capacity without headroom, cutting between designated cut marks, failing to seal connections properly, and powering the neon flex while still coiled on the reel. Every one of these mistakes is avoidable with correct planning and product knowledge.

Superb product and great service ,had an issue with one of the LEDs , it was resolved immediately and sent out same day, highly reccomended
We bought two lengths of LED strips with power supply and WiFi controls, one was 6mm and one 10mm the 10mm had a fault and did not light across the full 9 meters only the first meter, these were replaced after a email and phone call, all working well now and no issues
Very happy with this LED strip. The 4000K natural white is exactly what I was after—bright, clean light without looking too cold or clinical. The COB design gives a continuous line of light with no visible LED dots, which makes it look much more professional. I installed it in an aluminium profile, which gives it a really neat finish and should help with heat dissipation over time. The FreeCut feature was useful as it meant I could get the exact length I needed without any hassle. Overall, it's easy to work with, gives off plenty of light, and feels like a quality product. I'd definitely use it again for future projects.
Excellent service from the AtomLED team and the product is absolutely perfect. It is flexible, strong durable and the diffusion is so good. Can’t wait to show you how I used it in a new product I’m launching soon. Really happy, thanks guys.
My order was all dealt with very carefully and professionally
Takes a little time to check and setup but worked with their CCt controllers straight away. Simple to use and adjust light settings which was one of the reasons to stick with white. As for longevity, not sure if the unit holds last settings if the batteries need changing. We'll see.
Thanks.
Great high quality led looks great at night
Very happy with the purchase. Quality connectors and hassle-free setup.
I was searching for good quality LED rope lights and came across Atom. I ordered 50 mtrs reel of RGBW lights and the item was delivered very quickly and the after sales service has been second to none. Adam has very been helpful with my enquiries every time I have called and it's never to much for him to assist. I would definitely recommend buying from Atom and definitely will do again on my next project.
I ordered a specific lengths of ip68 warm white led neon strip for my drive. I installed it as I had installed my other led feature lighting from ATOM and the result was great. Delivered in less than 48hrs the strip was exactly the right length as I had specified. The quality is exceptional and easy to install. The end result justifies the investment and their prices are vey good. Can’t fault them and highly recommend. I will be back for more strip as I have further ideas around my house. Thanks Atom!
I ordered 2 controllers for a time-critical installation where I needed to confirm everything was working before completion. I placed the order and the items arrived early the next morning and in time for the installation to be completed! Very grateful for the swift response and attention.
Good LED strip for outdoor application and good advice from the Atom team. Thanks!
